Alexathon: Zaizi’s Alexa Challenge Kicks Off!

We all know that you can do some awesome stuff with Alexa from "Alexa call me an uber" to ‘find my phone’ to "Alexa start a 7min workout"! We thought we’d try our own hand at using the Amazon Alexa API calls to prototype some great new uses for Alexa for us Zaizi enthusiasts.

We have recently expanded our sysops team and with newly certified AWS solution architects under our belt we thought why not get the whole company involved in building innovative solutions combining different AWS services triggered by voice using Amazon Alexa echo. To get the best not only from our engineers but also from our business analysts, marketing geeks, testers, we have organised our very own  "Alexathon" at the end of the month.

Ana Sirvent our lead AWS Architect recently attended the AWS re:Invent in Vegas a few months back and the interest sparked from there. "Attending the event was a fantastic opportunity to meet thousands of people interested in the technology and what you can do with it. Being a trusted public sector partner for AWS has brought real opportunities for us and our Government clients and we look forward to expanding our skills in the technology suite to bring new and innovative ideas to our customers".

Rules are simple: Teams of 4 get one day to build an Alexa skill and demonstrate it. Training, documentation, AWS instances and Amazon Echo Dot provided in advance. Teams will be scored on the inventiveness of the idea, working demo and quality of the pitch. With winners getting a yet to be determined prize.

I look forward to sharing the results with you all, look out for blogs in the next few weeks with some cool new uses of Alexa at work and our experiences.
